A San Carlos Tradition Continues

Hometown Days Is Gearing Up!

The 32nd Annual San Carlos Hometown Days theme has been announced and the final weeks of preparation for our this beloved community event are underway! This year’s theme, “32 Years of Hometown Cheers” was submitted by theme contest winners Kelsey & Bridget Sennett, both of White Oaks School and both 3rd generation San Carlans! Each year, Hometown Days holds a call to enter the theme contest through each San Carlos School and individuals or teams of 2 can enter their original theme idea.

As the event prepartations are being made, the steering committee, made up of about 20 dedicated volunteers, works to coordinate an entire weekend of entertainment, food service, a parade, all the attractions, the beer garden, the fun run, and more. Not only does this require time but it also requires sponsors and donations. The cost of putting on the event is approximately $30,000. The city and Sheriff’s Office helps to underwrite the public safety costs but the rest is dependant on the support of the community.

“We have created ways for every member of the community to contribute to Hometown Days”, says Laura Teutschel, director of publicity & sponsorship. “Individuals can go on our website and contribute a dollar or two, and businesses and participate for as little as $75. It’s a great way to be seen by the over 12,000

Peninsula attendees, show their support for the community, and have fun promoting themselves…and it’s fully tax-deductible.”

So far, some of this year’s sponsors include:

Bianchini’s Market, the Girdlestone Family, Recology, Bon Vie Studios, Clocktower Music, Hiller Aviation Museum, Dr. frank Hsu, DDS, and yours truly, the San Carlos Blog!

We will be featuring ongoing San Carlos Hometown Days news in the weeks leading up to the event which is Friday May 18-Sunday, May 20, 2012. I encourage local businesses to participate in this wonderful event whether it be in the parade, through a sponsorship donation, or both. Non-profits have lots of affordable opportunities to promote their work as well!

Visit www.sancarloshometowndays.com for all sign up forms, paypal, event schedule, and more. Follow them on facebook, too!

A Proud, Longstanding Tradition

Get ready San Carlos! Chicken’s Ball 2012 is on its way. With it roots dating back to the Barbary Coast in San Francisco in 1900, the Chicken’s Ball has been a San Carlos tradition since it first premiered in 1940. Its primary goals: (1) raise money for San Carlos schools; and (2) build friendship in the community. Many of the participants in the biennial event have been helping or performing in the show for many years. Tickets for this year’s event will go on sale starting January 30th at the San Carlos History Museum. To be taken to the Chicken’s Ball website, click here.

***UPDATE***

Ever heard of Chickens’ Ball and wondered, what the heck is a
Chickens’ Ball?
In 1940 a San Carlos teacher started the San Carlos Chickens’
Ball as a way to raise milk money for all of the school children in
San Carlos. The Chickens’ Ball is a unique community show set
in the 1890’s Barbary Coast of San Francisco. Schools and
community groups perform variety skits and melodramas to
compete for pokes of “gold” just like they did in San Francisco in
the 1890’s. A distinctive San Carlos tradition, the Ball is held
every even year to raise funds for all seven schools in San Carlos.
Come join the fun and be a part of the 2012 Ball.

Do you like to sing or dance? Act? Sew? Paint? Brandish a glue gun? Hide behind the curtain? Control the
lights and sound? Chickens’ Ball is a community effort and requires the participation of many people on and off
stage. If you have a show talent and would like to be a part of the 2012 Chickens’ Ball, please contact:
