THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK
A TENDER, INSPIRING DRAMA
AT THE Carlmont Performing Arts Center from November 12 – 15
Winner Of The Pulitzer Prize, The Tony Award, The Critic’s Circle Award, and Virtually Every Other Coveted Prize of the Theatre
BELMONT, CA – The Carlmont High School Performing Arts Department presents the highly acclaimed, award winning play – The Diary of Anne Frank. The play is an inspiring story of perseverance and hope, which serves as a timeless lesson that the spirit of a child is impossible to deny. The play is dramatized by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett from the novel Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, edited by Otto Frank. The Diary of Anne Frank will be performed by the Carlmont Performing Arts Department from November 12 – 15 in the beautiful, new Carlmont High School Performing Arts Center at 1400 Alameda de las Pulgas in Belmont.
Second only to the Bible, The Diary of Anne Frank is one of the world’s most read books. Even if audiences have read the diary and watched the movie, experiencing the live stage play is a unique and moving experience that brings new life to the story and the characters. Set during one of history’s most brutal periods, the Holocaust, the play is based on the actual diary of a young girl who comes of age while hiding from the Nazis in a tiny, overcrowded attic with her family for more than two years. During their confinement, Anne discovers herself as a beautiful, thoughtful, and extraordinary girl. Her story is a constant reminder to us all of the power of the human spirit.
“The magic of this play is that it helps bring us understand an event that happened worldwide by allowing us to peer into the lives of individuals experiencing it,” explains Bernadette Fife, Director.
The production’s cast members add up to a talented group of students from Carlmont Hight School. Portraying key roles are Kayla Tabari as Anne Frank; Max Kardos as Otto Frank; Hazel Bean as Mrs. Frank; Audrey Harris as Margot Frank; Sean Traynor as Peter Van Daan; Conner Sines as Mr. Van Daan; Laura Van Arsdel and Mrs. Van Daan; Michael Saber as Albert Dussel; Andra Whipple as Mrs. Kraler and Samantha Lash as Miep Gies. Andra Whipple, Samantha Lash, Laura McVey and Sara Dumanske will also be appearing as Nazi Soldiers.
The set replicates the “Annex,” the Frank family’s actual hiding place, as closely as possible. According to Ms. Fife, it is important that the audience understands just how these people really lived in order to provide the complete experience of the play. The actors will remain on stage, even during intermission, to represent how every aspect of the characters life was on stage and in jeopardy. Soldiers will roam the audience to give the audience a feel of being a part of the community.
Carlmont High School, in a desire to make the play even more accessible to families in our community, is pleased to offer a discounted Student and Senior price. According to Bernadette Fife, “This is just one of the ways that we can help ensure that terribly important plays like this one are accessible to more families throughout the area.”

The Carlmont High School Performing Arts Department presents J.M. Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World, a work celebrated for its humor, insight, imagination, and power set in a secluded tavern on the west coast of Ireland. The production is the unromanticized comic portrait of Ireland’s rural peasants that once broke theatrical ground. Synge wants the audience to not only laugh at the characters but also notice their humanity in their faults and defects. Through situational and conversational humor, you will be drawn into this small pub in Ireland and be ensconced in the drama. The Playboy of the Western World will be performed by the Carlmont Performing Arts Department from November 4 – 7, 2010 in the beautiful, new Carlmont High School Performing Arts Center Studio Theatre at 1400 Alameda de las Pulgas in Belmont.
The Playboy of the Western World tells the story of Christy Mahon, a young man running away from his farm, claiming he killed his father. The locals are more interested in vicariously enjoying his story than in condemning the immorality of his murderous deed. He captures the romantic attention of the bar-maid Pegeen Mike, the daughter of the bar owner, Flaherty.
“This play is laced with lively dialogue including exaggeration and colorful imagery. Audiences should come see the play to see the theatrical ground that Synge broke in this comedic drama,” explains Nancy Martin, Director. “Let the Irish brogue wash over you to understand the satire and tragic elements of this play.”
The production’s cast members add up to a talented group of students from Carlmont High School under the directing talents of Nancy Martin.
The production will be the first performance in the newly finished “Studio Theatre” in the Carlmont Performing Arts Center. This intimate 70 person theatre will allow you to be a part of the set while experiencing the action of the play.
