The Candy Crushers – 2014 San Carlos Treasure Hunters Champions
Candy Crushers Strike San Carlos Gold
They beat out 59 competing teams and found the keys to the treasure chest. Isabel Lunderman, Abby Laing and Lexi Battaglini of Central Middle School, took home $1,000 cash and will have their names engraved in the San Carlos Treasure Hunters Champions Trophy.
I founded San Carlos Treasure Hunters in 2006 and this past Saturday was our 9th annual event. This year, I was joined by Dr. Gary Lau of San Carlos Orthodontics as a co-sponsor and event chair. SCTH tests each team’s knowledge on San Carlos history, our parks, the San Carlos History Museum. Teams must also learn to problem solve quickly under a chaotic and pressure-filled atmosphere. Each year we try bring something new to SCTH. This year, we had 415, 80-pound, bales of hay delivered to Casa de Flores in downtown San Carlos in the early morning hours of October 18th. By mid-day, we had a real hay maze that would later be haunted by the likes of some of the characters from this year’s story, such as a 10 foot grim reaper, a ghostly Spanish pirate and an old care-taker. This was just one of the ten secret clue locations that teams had to discover prior to finding the treasure chest keys.
On a personal note, I will be quite pleased never to see hay again for a very long time. Building and taking down that hay maze made me feel every day of my age and then some. Click the video below, move to full screen, to see this year’s San Carlos Treasure Hunters:
